Audition Requirements
Interested in auditioning for a Performing Arts Scholarship at the University of Pikeville?
Here’s what you need to know!
Requirements for an Instrumental (Band) audition:
WINDS & STRINGS
MUSIC ED, MUSIC PERFORMANCE, MAJORS/MINORS:
2 contrasting prepared pieces of any genre on their instrument(s) of choice. The auditioner will be asked to play two major/minor scales at random and play their chromatic scale.
PERCUSSIONISTS
MUSIC ED, MUSIC PERFORMANCE, MAJORS/MINORS:
1 prepared piece on marimba, one prepared piece on snare drum, auditioner will be asked to play rudiments (picked at random).
WINDS & STRINGS
SCHOLARSHIP ONLY
1 prepared piece or excerpt of any genre on their instruments (s) of choice. The auditioner will be asked to play 1 major scale at random and play their chromatic scale.
PERCUSSIONISTS
SCHOLARSHIP ONLY
1 prepared piece or excerpt (choice of percussion instrument), auditioner will be asked to play rudiments and/or scales on the marimba (at random).
Requirements Keyboard Studies audition:

Music Ed/Music Performance Majors/Minors
2 contrasting prepared pieces (3 minutes minimum) of any genre.
Scholarship Only:
1 prepared piece (3 minutes minimum) of any genre.
Requirements for a Vocal (Choir) audition:
MUSIC ED, MUSIC PERFORMANCE, AND PERFORMING ARTS MAJORS/MINORS:
Vocalists will be asked to do vocal warm up exercises led by Dr. Eric Rutherford to test range. 2 contrasting prepared pieces of any genre. A basic sight-reading exercise will be held with music selected by Dr. Eric Rutherford.
SCHOLARSHIP ONLY
Vocalists will be asked to do vocal warm up exercises led by Dr. Eric Rutherford to test range. 1 prepared piece of any genre.
Requirements for a Theatre auditions:
One 60-second monologue (comedic or dramatic) prepared from memory.
Optional, for students interested in musical theatre: one 21-32 bar cut of any musical theatre selection of the auditioner's choosing.
What can I expect from UPIKE Music’s Audition Day?
Once you have scheduled your select time and date for your UPIKE Performing Arts Audition, you will be contacted shortly thereafter to confirm your slot and to answer any questions you might have. Once officially confirmed, you will be added to the schedule for your chosen time.
On the day of your audition, please arrive at the Booth Auditorium lobby (5th floor, Record Memorial Bldg., UPIKE Main Campus) at least 30 minutes before your allotted audition time to sign in.
Once you’ve completed your registration, you will be allowed time to warm up before moving to your audition room.
Once you feel adequately prepared, all that’s left is the audition!
